Gold Medal for Conceptual Garden at RHS Hampton
Wrath – Eruption of Unhealed Anger
We are thrilled to have been awarded a Gold Medal at RHS Hampton 2014 for our Conceptual Show Garden entitled Wrath – Eruption of Unhealed Anger.
A concept garden is an opportunity for a designer to push the boundaries of creativity and communicate at a new level through garden design and landscaping. The Concept gardens at Hampton this year each depicted a different ‘deadly sin’, and the theme of our garden is Wrath.
THE DESIGN
The design depicts uncontrolled feelings of anger as an emotional pressure, self-destructiveness, violence and instability. Inspiration came from a volcano and its explosive eruption. The focal point of the garden is a raised central feature, reminiscent of an erupting volcano. A freestanding graphic feature wall and a red-painted dead tree sculpture reinforce the concept of anger, complemented by lighting, smoke and burning smells.
RESPONSE TO THE GARDEN
We are delighted at the response to this garden and the media coverage it has attracted.
One of the most poignant responses was when we received a phone call from a teacher who had visited the garden with her students. They had recognised the negative feelings and had been particularly touched with how the garden was a space to acknowledge these feelings in a positive and a beautiful way.
